As a manager, you need to constantly grow so you can manage your team efficiently. But it’s also a full-time job to manage yourself. Here are six rules I live by when managing myself.1. Don’t over-work yourself.
Work hard
Be prepared to work hard.
- You can’t expect efficiency from your team if you aren’t willing to put in the effort yourself
- Organization and time management are essential. Find ways to avoid procrastination
- Management is work that is completed behind the scenes.
Sharing is caring
The more you give out, the more you’ll get back
- Don’t believe there’s intellectual competition among colleagues
- If you withhold something from someone, how can you expect them to contribute effectively to your team?
- Create more work for yourself to pick up
Be decisive
Take all the facts and process them
- Listen to your gut-feeling
- Have the courage to make the right decision
- Believe that if it’s a mistake, you can learn from it
- If it’s wrong, you have evidence to back-up what you believed to be the correct decision
Be healthy
Prioritize what you need to manage first and consistently
- Mental health is just as important as your physical health
- Recognize when you cannot control or change something and adjust your attitude to change it
- If you want to live a long, healthy life, make sure your health is first
Enjoy yourself, always
To do anything well, you need to have the passion for it
- Find the pleasure in a job well done
- It’s about balance
- Learn to pinpoint the times when you have to be serious
- For the majority of the time, find humor
Speak the truth
If you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.
- An employer expects honesty when they hire you, so expect to be treated as a person of integrity when applying for a job
- Better to be known for being blunt than a liar
