Embarking on the journey of cultural sensitivity begins with the simple act of asking. How do we navigate the delicate terrain of unfamiliar names? Let's explore the importance of getting names right and the respectful way to inquire when we're unsure.
Learning to pronounce a colleague’s name correctly is an important effort in creating an inclusive workplace
One study found that resumes with white-sounding names were 28% more likely to get a callback for a job interview.
- In an effort to normalize non-Anglo Saxon names in our workplaces, we’ve created a short guide for both the pronouncer and the person whose name is mispronounced.
How to pronounce names correctly
Ask the person to pronounce it – and actively listen
- Observe and practice
- Do something when you realize you’ve been mispronouncing it
- Apologize when you get it wrong
- Clarify again
- If you meet someone again after a while, say, “Remind me of your name again.”
How to respond when people mispronounce your name
Consider having a phonetic/memorable pronouncer
- Be insistent on having it said correctly, even when it means interrupting a client or someone more senior than you
- Respond with the correct spelling when people misspell it
